"Samiotissa" is a traditional Greek folk song about a girl from Samos, who the speaker of the text is longing for. The lively 7/8 meter and upbeat tempo contrast with the anguish of the text. In this a cappella arrangement, the supporting voices mimic the strumming of a bouzouki and the sounds of the ocean waves, as if the speaker can hear their "Samiotissa" sailing back home. A mix of complex textures and homophony drive this piece forward, while remaining accessible for an advanced high school choir.
